THE other day I was going through a newspaper report on a young man called Akhtar who was arrested wrongly by the members of the law enforcing agency. I fail to understand how the law enforcers could arrest an innocent person instead of the intended one. Before framing final charges the police should make sure that they have not done any mistake. Often hurried and half-baked investigation and sheer negligence of the law enforcers land people like Akhtar in jail.
Akhtar Hossain had to spend one month in the prison and then he came out on bail. But since then he has been running to court and the police station to clear his name from the case. I know he will not be able to clear his name so easily but I hope the newspaper report about him will help his cause. I also hope the law enforcers who indicted the young man will be punished and the victim will get compensation for his harassment. Often the law enforcers indict innocent people for no fault of theirs and cause them harassment. It is high time the court took into cognizance of such issues and ordered exemplary punishment for such offenders.
